Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022: Celebrating the Sustainability and Beauty of International Design
Salone del Mobile.Milano will celebrate the 60th edition of the key event for the international design community. To facilitate the meeting of as many operators as possible, expected from all over the world, the organizers had already opted for a date change, which is confirmed for June, from the 7th to the 12th, and as always at Fiera Milano Rho.
The desire for recovery is strong, after the forced stop two years ago and the event of the SuperSalone in 2021. This had a strong symbolic meaning, but it could not replace the large exhibition that operators have always awaited. Now, despite the difficulties not having lessened, indeed, perhaps aggravated by the war scenario, there is a desire to reassert the role of the Salone as a square, a meeting place, and an event that builds bridges. Resuming momentum does not mean to sideline the humanitarian crisis affecting Europe and the world. On the contrary, the business world is moving constructively: Salone del Mobile with Federlegnoarredo have announced a significant donation to the World Food Program, made possible by the involvement of major design brands.
The theme for 2022, "Designing Sustainability, Celebrating Beauty", sums up the founding values of the event. It will be a great challenge, that of demonstrating that it is possible, and indeed necessary, to return to holding large international in-person events, managing to reconcile sustainability criteria and environmental attention with furniture production.
The 60th Salone will return to its classic format, finding its original, pre-pandemic form. It will therefore cover the entire exhibition center, with 2,000 exhibitors, including over 600 young designers under 35. Moreover, it will feature two biennials: Eurocucina, with its side event Ftk (Technology For the Kitchen), and the International Bathroom Exhibition, with the presence of 1,200 exhibitors, over an area of about 200,000 square meters.
Classic yet innovative. At the opening of the extensive exhibition area in Rho, the Salone Satellite, a major novelty of the year 2022, will stand out. An event within the event, it will shape a hot topic: "Designing for Our Future Selves / Progettare per i Nostri Domani", shining a spotlight on sustainability. The layout is designed as an inclusive square, meant to be accessible to the blind, thanks to braille signs, and to the visually impaired, thanks to a targeted use of color.
The theme of ecological transition remains central not only in the creation of special events but also at an operational level. The "green" principles also inspire the guidelines for exhibitors and stand builders. The invitation to everyone is to prefer reusable materials, such as wood, recovery (upcycling), low environmental impact or FSC and PEFC certified, and to consider the sustainability of the sourcing of the materials themselves; in general, to avoid waste of materials, electricity, and water.
