The future of Interior Design at the 2023 Edition of the Salone del Mobile
Change is always an elusive, slow, but inexorable matter. And often it comes to evolve and improve what already exists. When it comes to interior design certainly evolving are the style, taste, the projectual and aesthetic vision of those who create furnishing elements for a better living in spaces. And in this air of change, the Salone del Mobile 2023 brought with it a series of fascinating trends that are redefining this world.
We personally attended the Fair, exploring with interest the themes that dominated this edition of the Salone: sustainability, modular furnishing, bold colors, and craftsmanship.
Sustainability has taken a central role at the Salone del Mobile 2023 and will assume an even more significant position in the global future. Many exhibitors at the fair concentrated on using eco-sustainable materials like reclaimed wood, recycled glass, and organic fabrics such as cotton, linen, and hemp. This approach aims to interpret design with no negative impacts on the planet, creating recyclable products. The goal is to create furnishings that are completely environmentally friendly. And also respectful of spaces: parallel to the path of sustainability runs that leading to modular and multifunctional furniture.
Modular and multifunctional furniture was presented as versatile and flexible solutions to adapt to different needs and environments. The ability to reconfigure and personalize spaces is greatly appreciated at a time when we are seeking more sustainable ways to optimize interiors while preserving well-being. Modular interior design promotes these values of adaptability and sustainability, allowing the creation of versatile environments, shaped to individual needs.
We also witnessed the explosion of bold colors and original patterns. In recent years, minimalism with its neutral tones has dominated interior design, yet now designers are embracing the opposite trend towards maximalism. Vibrant hues, captivating motifs, and original textures are taking center stage, adding personality and originality to any space.
Lastly, a renewed focus on craftsmanship and handmade pieces. The unique charm and beauty of artisanal creations have never lost their luster but are today experiencing their Renaissance. Furniture, accessories, and fabrics made by hand with natural materials such as wood, leather, and metal, using traditional artisan techniques by designers from around the world, are a trend increasingly stabilizing into a new normal. These pieces carry with them a story and a quality that offers an authentic connection to the past, to memories, to beauty.
In its 2023 edition, the Salone del Mobile in Milan has certainly proven to be an exciting event for interior design enthusiasts because it broke the dominance of past years' neutral minimalism. Interior furnishing is continuously evolving, pushing towards new horizons that increasingly combine sustainability, functionality, creativity, and craftsmanship. These trends will undoubtedly influence how we inhabit our spaces, offering solutions that respond to our personal needs and promoting a more conscious approach to interior design itself.
